Fiji warms to idea of shifting UN from US to China

Fiji's interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has expressed support for the idea of relocating the UN headquarters to China.

He didn't say who is advocating a UN shift away from New York, but says the only place Fiji would lobby to move the UN headquarters to is China.

Commodore Bainimarama was speaking to Auckland-based Radio Tarana after the interim regime revealed this week that three US visa applications by Fiji officials were unsuccessful.

This prevented Fiji delegates, including the British-born chief justice, Anthony Gates, from attending international conferences in the US and in Mexico.

Commodore Bainimarama says the problems over the visas will be taken up with the secretary general of the United Nations.
