Row over allocation of tractors pre-elections in Cook Islands

9:44 am on 25 October 2010

The Cook Islands party believes the government could be breaching the electoral act by allocating 25 free tractors around each constituency in the country before next month's general elections.

Cook Islands Party president, Henry Puna, has questioned why the tractors are being given out at election time and that the recent arrival of the tractors from China has received considerable media coverage

The tractors have been provided by the Chinese government through a grant and will be used to complement the new agriculture programme Te One Kura, which is aimed at reviving and developing Agricultural development in the Cook Islands.

The former Cabinet approved the purchase of the 25 tractors in July last year but the transporting them to Rarotonga experienced some delays.
