Fiji columnist deplores loss of key staff in Times shake-up

A veteran Fiji journalist says the Fiji Times losing its editor is a great loss, especially if it has happened for political reasons.

Netani Rika has resigned, just two weeks after News Limited of Australia sold the paper to Fiji's Motibhai group in line with a media decree by the interim regime curbing foreign ownership.

And the deputy editor, Sophie Foster, has taken what is being described as sudden leave.

Seona Smiles says she hopes both can continue working as journalists.

"For people to have to leave a job that they are competent at, for political reasons, is always difficult. And both Netani Rika and Sophie Foster remained very staunch and true to journalistic ethics, throughout the recent period of political crisis."
