Hawaii legislature approves same sex civil unions

9:44 am on 3 May 2010

The Hawaii legislature has passed a bill legalising civil unions between same sex adults.

This gives any adult couple the same rights and benefits the state provides to those who marry.

If Governor Linda Lingle signs the measure, Hawaii would be one of six American states giving all the rights of marriage to same-sex couples, but without calling it marriage.

She has not indicated whether she will sign or veto it.
