Fiji military commander agrees to meet chiefs council

3:25 pm on 10 November 2006

Fiji's military commander has addressed the Great Council of Chiefs which is trying to broker a resolution to his standoff with the Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase.

After boycotting yesterday's session of the GCC, Commodore Frank Bainimarama gave a presentation this morning after reportedly obtaining an assurance the body would not try to resolve the row itself.

A delegation of chiefs had visited Commodore Bainimarama yesterday to ask him to come to the meeting.

He told the Fiji Sun newspaper that the delegation was told the army would only attend if the chiefs backed off and left the government to solve the problem.

Those assurances were later given by the chairman of the GCC, Ratu Ovini Bokini.
