The European Union has signed a financing agreement with the Papua New Guinea Government for more than US$4 million to the Gazelle Restoration Authority in East New Britain.

The Post Courier reports the money will be available for GRA projects like the construction and delivery of water supply, electricity and sanitation facilities to resettlement areas.

PNG's Finance and Treasury Minister Bart Philemon said the agreement would support the Government's efforts to restore the Gazelle Peninsula which was affected by the twin volcanic eruptions of 1994.

The EU representative to PNG Anthony Crasner said the aid was not for charity but because EU's fundamental objective was to alleviate poverty through sustainable development.
