Fiji government sets up department to evaluate biofuel

10:30 am on 21 July 2005

The Fiji government has created a department within the Prime Minister's Office to evaluate the potential for the production of bio-fuels in the country.

The move comes in the wake of predicted sharp declines in the price of sugar.

The potential for local bio-fuel production has also become urgent because the world price for oil has reached an all time record.

Fiji's sugar cane crop and coconut oil have the potential to provide bio-fuels to generate power and be added as supplements for motor vehicle fuel.
