Bougainville police ask rebels to end roadblocks

9:10 pm on 31 May 2005

Police in the Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville have called for the immediate removal of roadblocks in the South of the main island.

Police commander Assistant Commissioner, Joseph Bemu, says the blockade set up by supporters of the separatist Meekamui movement are unnecessary and have nothing to do with the election whose outcome will be known this week.

Mr Bemu says the action is causing inconvenience to the travelling public.
