10:33 am on 15 April 2005

The Niue Premier Young Vivian, says if New Zealand residents want to vote in the upcoming election than they need to return home.

Mr Vivian has rejected a call by the 20 thousand strong Niuean community in New Zealand to be allowed to vote in the election at the end of the month.

Tension between the New Zealand community and those on Niue has increased as the islands population continues to decline.

Mr Vivian says if people, especilly the young, want a say about how the island is run, then they need to move back and make a real commitment to the country.

"There is no other Niue. There is no Niue in Auckland or wellington and i think people must realise that. I think one of the things for young people is to ask the question are they prepared to die for Niue, to sacrifice everything for Niue."
