Pacific Islands urged to fight plan to split HIV/Aids programmes from family planning

Pacific Island countries are being asked to band together to reject plans being considered by President Bush's administration, to deny funding to foreign NGOs unless they separate HIV/Aids programmes from family planning services.

The call comes from the Director General of the world's largest sexual and reproductive health organisation, the International Planned Parenthood Federation in New York.

Dr Steven Sinding says that what the US wants, won't work, in Pacific countries.

"The Pacific Island states cannot effectively address the Aids pandemic without providing strong and consistent access to reproductive health services. Treatment is one thing, but prevention, which is the key priority in this region, really requires that we work together through family planning and other reproductive health services."
