French Polynesia celebrates French solo rower

12:36 pm on 29 March 2005

The French woman rower who crossed the Pacific on her own from Peru to French Polynesia is being celebrated in Tahiti.

Maud Fontenoy rowed for 73 days to reach the Marquesas islands at the weekend to become the first woman to achieve this.

She had earlier rowed across the Atlantic Ocean but she says she may turn to sailing now.

"I still love the ocean, so I guess the next project will be a challenge on the ocean, probably with sail and not oars, probably on a sailing boat."
