Heavy rain on Fiji's main island of Viti Levu has brought flash floods, landslides and widespread disruption.

Flooding has been reported from the Tailevu and Naitasiri provinces north of Suva and in low-lying areas around the capital.

The Suva-Nadi Highway was blocked for many hours after a landslide which also brought down power lines.

Approach roads to Suva were flooded causing traffic jams, disruption and absenteeism from schools and work.

Rural food gardens were under water and crops have been destroyed, including traditional foods such as taro, tapioca and kava.

Road conditions were so bad that one bus company cancelled all services between Suva and Lautoka.

Some boat owners were reported to be doing brisk business transporting stranded people.
