An intriguing event is taking place on the Wellington waterfront in early December and late January, taking sound art out of the university and to the people. It's called Waterfront Monophony.

As the public walk along the waterfront, they will hear the sounds of five New Zealand composers' works (Jesse Austin-Stewart, Flo Wilson, Hakopa Kuka-Larsen, Mia Kelly and Rose Windeler) blend with the surrounding sounds of the wind and sea.

Upbeat caught up with one of the composers, Jesse Austin-Stewart. He's a producer and audio engineer currently completing a PhD looking into accessibility in spatial audio.

Jesse talked to Upbeat about the event, his interest in breaking down the barriers of access to sound art, and about his own musical background.
