After nearly 30 years as Principal Horn of the Auckland Philharmonia, Nicola Baker has decided to hang up her instrument and move on to other things.

Nicola started as a pianist, but found she loved the more collaborative nature of music-making with the French horn.

Talking with Upbeat, Nicola touched on her studies at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, playing in the first American-Soviet Orchestra in the late 1980s, and the APO horn section’s successful campaign in 2014 to topple 'The Lark Ascending' from RNZ Concert’s Settling the Score in favour of Schumann’s 'Konzertstück' for no fewer than four horns.
