Dimitri Atanassov is a familiar name to New Zealand audiences: the Bulgarian-born violinist is a former Auckland Philharmonia concertmaster and member of the Ogen Piano Trio.

After leaving the APO, Dimitri based himself in Cremona as a violin maker and restorer, but is back in town performing with the New Zealand Chamber Soloists.

Upbeat talked with cellist James Tennant and Dimitri Atanassov about violin making and their upcoming concert, Dark Bright Night.

The programme explores themes of dark and light, with music by Beethoven, Brahms and Jenny McLeod.
