Question: What does the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra have in common with an iceberg?

Answer: Like an iceberg, the bulk of what the NZSO does is under the surface; the concerts that we go to (or hear broadcast on RNZ Concert) are only part of the orchestra’s activities.

Upbeat caught up with NZSO Education Manager Simon Brew for an update on some of the community projects the orchestra is undertaking, including 'Open Doors' - the pilot is happening on Friday 20 November in Wellington's Michael Fowler Centre.

For this full-day event, members of the public of all ages can hear stories, talk with musicians, watch masterclasses and even try their hand at conducting, with a little guidance from star conductor Gemma New.

"We’ve got a 15-piece string ensemble ready to play Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," says Simon Brew.

“It’s going to be something really special and I hope that anyone who has ever wanted to conduct comes and has a go. Don’t be shy!”
