Drummer and producer Riki Gooch is one of four composers chosen to present new work at the 2020 Wellington Jazz Festival.

His project, titled Ngā Tuone (the gestures), ties in with his doctoral research at the University of Otago. Riki’s developing a system of gestures called conduction, which on the one hand communicates musical information, but also combines with cultural mechanisms that exist in te ao māori.

He describes it as "that beautiful positioning between composition and total improvisation".

Riki joined Nick Tipping in the studio recently to talk about this fascinating approach, and what the audience can expect to both see and hear when the work is performed in November.
