Two years ago, a remarkable young pianist topped New Zealand’s classical charts with a solo piano disc released on Rattle Records.

Lixin Zhang was just 16 years old at the time, and a student at Burnside High in Christchurch. He’d already gained an FTCL from Trinity College and given concerts in Spain.

Lixin attended a summer music programme in Switzerland in 2017, and was one of only three pianists invited to return the following year to perform as a guest artist. He’s now enrolled at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles and currently attending classes via Zoom from New Zealand.

On Sunday 11 October in Wellington, Lixin will be giving an all-Chopin recital at St Andrew's on the Terrace.

David Morriss caught up with him recently to talk about his studies and the upcoming concert.
