Holly Mathieson's vision for a healthy musical future

Kiwi conductor Holly Mathieson is back home and raring to go! She says New Zealanders are in a very fortunate position compared to the rest of the world to be able to attend live concerts.

This Saturday Holly will make her  debut conducting the Christchurch Symphony and Michael Houstoun – who plays Brahms Concerto No 1 for Piano while principal flutist Anthony Ferner bows out from his position with a performance of Poulenc's Cantilena for Flute arranged by Chris Cree Brown .   

Then next Friday 9 October she will conduct the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra's Opera in Gala -Tales of Love and Betrayal, presented by Simon O'Neill and featuring many of our top operatic singers.

Holly Mathieson has won plaudits in all forms of music direction from opera, ballet to full scale symphonic programmes. She is the new Music Director of Symphony Nova Scotia in Halifax, Canada. 

Last year Holly’s debut CD featuring Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto with Isata Kanneh- Mason and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra was released and immediately landed on the No.1 spot in the UK Classical charts.

Holly spoke with Eva Radich about the fundamental changes she foresees in the performing arts in the time of COVID-19 and what the long term effects might be for musicians such as herself.
