Mat Hoyes is a music teacher at Porirua College, and one of the inaugural Lilburn Research Awards recipients. The awards, administered by the Alexander Turnbull Library and the Lilburn Trust, are intended to enable original research into aspects of New Zealand music.

Mat’s project is called "Counting the Beat", and aims to provide NCEA students with the resources they need to investigate and analyse New Zealand songs.

Beginning in September, his research will include examining scores and recordings of popular New Zealand songs, and looking at their historical context. The result will be a series of online videos and other resources.

“The project will create an online space where students can connect with resources about New Zealand music aimed at New Zealand rangatahi,” he says.
