Joe Thomas is a five-time winner of the Open Bass Trombone section at the National Brass Band Championships, he’s currently Musical Director of the Tauranga Big Band, and is Principal Trombone for Waitakere Auckland Brass.

He's also passionate about music education. An itinerant Music Teacher, Joe teaches brass in the Western Bay of Plenty region where he also coaches the Aquinas and Bethlehem College Big Bands, and has been the manager of NZ Secondary Schools Brass Band.

As a soloist, Joe has performed in front of both the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band, and New Zealand Army Band, and many of NZ’s top brass bands including Wellington Brass, Canterbury Brass, and Waitakere Auckland Brass.

He talks with David Morriss about the upcoming concert with the Bay of Plenty Symphonia - he's the soloist in Grondahl's Trombone Concerto - why the trombone is the instrument for him.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Bay of Plenty Symphonia's concert on 16 August has been postponed.

The new date (levels permitting) is Saturday 29 August, 2.30pm, at Holy Trinity Church, Devonport Road, Tauranga
