Shades of Shakti is a one-off show at New Zealand Festival featuring music from the famous 70s Indian jazz fusion band Shakti, led by guitarist John McLaughlin.

It’s being performed by local guitarist Justin Firefly Clarke, violinist Tristan Carter, tabla player Chetan Ramlu and Thomas Friggens (percussion), who do their own improvisations based on the original Shakti material.

For their NZ Festival show Shades of Shakti the Wellington players will be joined by sārangī maestro Sangeet Mishra from India.

Justin Firefly Clarke and Chetan Ramlu came into the RNZ music studio recently to talk with Eva Radich, and gave an improvised performance based on John McLaughlin's tune Joy.
