European Broadcasting Union: uniting the world through music

From Upbeat, 3:30 pm on 5 March 2020

This year members of the European Broadcasting Union are celebrating International Women's Day together.

RNZ Concert is an associate member of the EBU and so it joins with nearly 400 radio and television stations in 40 countries worldwide in celebrating the achievements of women composers and musicians in all genres.

Pascale Labrie is the Head of Music at the European Broadcasting Union. She believes that the strength of this international network is felt when it unites, "when all those people look in the same direction together".

The response to the Women in Music Days project has exceeded expectations, and "there are as many ways of doing things as there are radio channels".

"People are doing it their own way and people are not all at the same place with those questions. It depends on the cultural environment. It depends on so many things. We knew that people wouldn't celebrate in the same way."

The initiative has revealed a lot of information - "things that audiences wouldn't have had access to without that event".

Pascale Labrie will spend International Women's Day visiting the websites of participating radio stations to see what's on offer. She'll also be listening, and despite not speaking many of the languages of member stations Pascale will still enjoy the tone of voice, the delivery and the music on offer. It'll be her way of saying thank you for all the effort made by public broadcasters for Women in Music Days 2020.
