1pm Review: NYO’s Firebird

Last weekend the NZSO National Youth Orchestra had its Firebird concerts in Wellington and Auckland. The group performed Suites 1 and 2 from De Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat, André Jolivet’s Bassoon Concerto featuring Todd Gibson-Cornish, the world premiere of Josiah Carr’s Redwood, and Stravinsky’s The Firebird. Peter Mechen reviews Friday’s performance.

The cello was named Germany’s instrument of the year for 2018.  Throughout the week we're celebrating the instrument with different compositions featuring the cello. Today it's Beethoven’s Cello Sonata in A Op 69 performed by Daniel Müller-Schott and Angela Hewitt.

You can listen to a selection of RNZ recordings featuring the cello on our Music Alive Collections page.
