Chris WATSON: ogee

From NZ Composer Sessions, 12:00 am on 17 February 2015

ogee scratches a compositional itch, the inevitable consequence of a youth spent listening to concerti of the Romantics.

More pertinently, it might contain traces of the fabrics of Dutilleux's L'arbre des songes, Lutoslawski's Chain II and Gubaidulina's Offertorium

The title is after the profile of a shape seen often in woodworking, which resembles the contour of a recurring melodic idea.

Heartfelt thanks go to Justine Cormack (violin) and the Hamish McKeich-led New Zealand Symphony Orchestra for their glittering performance on the work's RNZ Concert recording.  Dr Jack Richards supported this recording, for which I am immensely grateful.

ogee was written while I was Mozart Fellow at the University of Otago.
