Tumbu is the name given to one of the pipes from the Sardinnian two-piped woodwind instrument the launeddas, whose polyphonic abilities are akin to the way Lardelli scored both solo and orchestral clarinet parts. The work was commissioned by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra for clarinettist Patrick Barry.
