Acker Bilk became a household name on the strength of his monster hit “Stranger On The Shore” in 1962 which sold over a million copies worldwide.
Light orchestral tunes were big business in the 60’s specially in film soundtracks. We feature tunes from Henry Mancini’s soundtracks for Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Hatari.
Rhiannon Giddens and Francesco Turrisi are visiting Wellington for NZ Festival 2020 playing music from their 2019 album There is No Other which is bursting with good tunes. She’s an American songwriter, violinist and banjo player and he’s a pianist and percussionist – together they really do make beautiful music.
Some people regard Benny Goodman as one of the greatest clarinet stars. RCA recorded Goodman and his Orchestra on tour in the Soviet Union in 1962. It still sounds hot nearly 60 years later.
