Mariachi gets a female makeover

From Pick and Mix

New York mariachi band Flor De Toloache has joined the line-up for WOMAD NZ. The band was founded ten years ago by a group of Latino women fed up with the male dominated culture of mariachi music. Their new album Indestructible has just been nominated for a Latin Grammy and the first single, 'Besos de Mezcal' is nominated for Best Regional Song.

Aotearoa artist Troy Kingi has set himself the ambitious goal of releasing ten albums in 10 different genre in 10 years. The 3rd album Holy Colony Burning Acres harks back to the early days of reggae.

Put three top players from three continents together and you get the alchemy of AKA Trio. Guitarist Antonio Forcione from Italy, Senegalese kora master Seckou Keita and Brazilian percussionist Adriano Adewale are individually great, but together they’re magic. Joy is their perfectly named first studio album, a total delight.

.

American jazz singer Madeleine Peyroux burst onto the music scene as a young woman with bags of talent and a hip attitude. She hit the big time with Careless Love which sold half a million copies. It was produced by Larry Klein who also produced Anthem her new album of original songs. It’s full of cleverness and high spirits like in this song ‘On My Own’.

They’re serious musicians, serious about giving their audience a good time. The three sisters who make up Ahn Piano Trio had the bright idea of pooling their talents while studying in New York. The trio made a name for playing lively classical versions of popular songs. They even taken on traditional tango.

Laura Marling is shaping up to be a big star while still in her 20’s. She already has several albums under her belt and a big following.  Her 2017 album Semper Femina is all about the female perspective especially on other women and earned Marling a Granny nomination. .

The great Canadian singer Suzie Leblanc has a spectacular career performing Baroque music. She’s from Acadia in New Brunswick and has a passion for finding out about her own lost musical heritage. Acadia, which was the first French colony in North America but it's music was lost after the French settlers were forced to leave by later colonists. Her album La Mer Jolie contains the songs she’s rediscovered.
