We commemorate the centenary of Edmund Hillary with a musical tribute from Public Service Broadcasting; they use samples from film archives and electronics to create a majestic evocation of the 1953 British Mt Everest expedition.

In 1969 composer and engineer Wendy Carlos followed up her major hit ‘Switched-On Bach’ for Moog synthesizer with an even more sophisticated electronic version of the classics. In ‘Well-Tempered Synthesizer’ she uses music by Bach, Monteverdi, Handel, and Domenico Scarlatti to push the boundaries of what is possible on her electronic keyboard. Wendy Carlos will celebrate her 80th birthday later this year.
We have a taste of Chamamé, a folk music genre from Northeast Argentina played by accordionist Raul Barboza and guitarist Horacio Castillo from their CD ‘Winter in Paris’.
50 years ago Argentine composer and bandoneon player Astor Piazzolla wrote ‘Winter’ from his ‘Four Seasons of Buenos Aires’. We feature a recording of Winter by Piazzolla’s own Quinteto Tango Nuevo, recorded live in Vienna in 1983.
