Madeleine Peyroux's seductively joyful album

From Pick and Mix

Pick and Mix Sunday at midday on RNZ Concert features a selection of music from Madeleine Peyroux's latest album 'Anthem'. The music press response is resoundingly positive: "a finely polished production" says Downbeat and "a supreme example of ensemble work" says JazzTimes. Judge for yourself on Sunday.

The Songlines Music Awards have just been announced. Winner in the Asia/Pacific category is Small Island Big Song a project of indigenous fusion music recorded across the Pacific and Indian Ocean to focus attention on the life-threatening dangers of global warming to the region. We feature Aotearoa taonga puoro player Horomona Horo and Easter Island singer Yoyo Tuki.

Christchurch based country blues band The Eastern tackle tough subjects in their highly enjoyable 2014 album The Territory. Troubador Adam McGrath voices the hardships for Christchurch’s poor, made more extreme because of earthquakes. His sister Jess Shanks shows her star vocal quality as she spins her spellbinding tales.

And we take a trip back to the 1970's with the original crossover artists Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The English trio used the Hammond organ and Moog synthesizer to great effect on their chart topping jazzed up reinventions of classical music. We revisit their prog rock version of Aron Copeland's  orchestral work 'Fanfare for the Common Man'.
