American musician Leyla McCalla, a cellist, guitarist and banjoist, was a member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops. She joined her fellow Chocolate Drop Rhiannon Giddens in the Smithsonian Folkways release, Songs of Our Native Daughters (New Horizons 7 April 2019).

As a solo artist, she has laid out some extraordinary soundworlds over the last decade including an album of songs based on the poetry of Langston Hughes.

William Dart finds McCalla exploring her Haitian heritage in her new album Breaking the Thermometer.
