Life was simpler, and happier, back in 1985 when Look Blue Go Purple brought out their first EP, Bewitched. Five women who proved that they could do the Dunedin jangle every bit as well as their guy counterparts.
William Dart was a devoted fan of LBGP thirty odd years ago. This is music with a convivial swing to it, catching a sense of good times that were maybe a little feisty around the edges.
And now Flying Nun has re-released the band's three EPs along with some previously unreleased live recordings in a single package. Heaven.
Sneaky Feelings, from the same place, same time, have gone one better: released a brand new album, their first since Hard Love Stories in 1988.
Progress Junction picks up where they left off, creating songs with melodies that unfurl in the air like streamers in the wind, following a perfectly navigated harmonic trail.
What's changed is a reinforced democracy - whereas in the 80s, Matthew Bannister and David Pine were the dominant songwriters, the new album presents three songs from each of the four members.
