Welcome to this programme from the Whakatipu Music Festival 2022, which was held in Queenstown at the Memorial Centre. In today’s concert the young musicians who have been performing in this festival team up to form chamber music groups.

We start with a piano quintet. The group is made up of violinists April Ju and Hazuki Katsukawa, viola player Cecile McNeill, and they’re joined by NZSO’s cellist Andrew Joyce and pianist Shuan Liu.

They play Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat, Op 44. To tell us more about the piece, here’s Cecile McNeill.

Next, we have a gorgeous piece of music by Franz Schubert: Shepherd on the Rock. The soprano is Clare Hood, and she’s joined by clarinettist Stefenie Pickson and pianist Jessica Chi. But before they perform it, here’s Clare to tell us more about the piece.
