Performed by Indra Hughes on the Auckland Town Hall Organ, 13 August 2021.
The Overture to Handel’s The Occasional Oratorio was, as Indra Hughes writes in his programme notes, “a hurriedly-written piece of patriotic political propaganda in response to the ‘occasion’ of Duke of Cumberland’s brutally bloody defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie at the battle of Culloden.”
But despite it being hurriedly-written, Hughes describes this overture as one of Handel’s finest.
