The earliest known polyphonic setting of 'Stella Caeli' is by John Cook, found in the Old Hall manuscript. This important collection of works is dated from just after the battle of Agincourt (1415). This setting is very simple and syllabic.

John Thorne’s setting is the most recent, written in thanksgiving for the deliverance of his home town of York in 1551.
