English folk

This week’s Global Sounds features songs from The Full English. Instigated by the English Folk Dance and Song Society, this project draws together the most important early 20th century collections – by collectors such as Cecil Sharp, Percy Grainger and Ralph Vaughan Williams – into an online database. To launch the project, folk singer and project co-ordinator Fay Hield brought together a band to record 12 of the songs from this vast archive (Topic 220823)

There’ll also be music from Union Café, one of the last albums to be recorded by the Penguin Café Orchestra while founder Simon Jeffes was at the helm (Penguin Café 350016)
