Irving Berlin

Steve Danby escorts us into the toe-tapping world of Irving Berlin

A Russian-born American, Irving Berlin is the most successful songwriter in pop history. Others have made more money, but Irving wrote more hits over a longer period than anyone else. 'White Christmas' remained the number-one selling song for about fifty years. In 1911, his song 'Alexander's Ragtime Band' became a world-wide craze and the twenty-three year old Berlin became a celebrity.
