Sir Neville Marriner, best known as the founder and director of The Academy of St Martin in the Fields has died at the age of 92. He was still working as a conductor, having done a concert in Italy a few days ago and with further engagements still in his diary.
He was a fellow student of New Zealand violinist Alan Loveday at the Royal College of Music in London and in 2011 talked with Charlotte Wilson about his friendship with Loveday.
In May 2016, shortly after Loveday's death, Marriner talked with Clarissa Dunn.
Sir Neville Marriner released hundreds of recordings with the ASMF which became staples of classical radio stations around the world, including New Zealand. His soundtrack to the movie Amadeus was so popular it topped charts and sold 6.5m copies.
