He talks about early influences in his life, his experience of school and his introduction to politics including his time as a Cabinet Minister and the start of the Mana Motuhake party. Albie Tahana comments on Mr Rata's religious faith, and Whetu Tirikatene-Sullivan discusses his portfolios during the Kirk government. Bruce Gregory talks about Matiu Rata's part in the Muriwhenua Fishing Claims. The programme also covers the announcement of Matiu Rata's resignation from the Labour Party and Parliament in 1979.
