This story has been adapted from Touching the Universe, a coming-of-age novel inspired by the tumultuous events that gripped America in 1969, from Apollo 11’s historic landing on the moon to the tragedies of the Vietnam War and Chappaquiddick. It's a novel about hope and longing, the glow of everyday wonders and the transforming power of single events. 

 

Tom Romeo is a writer and journalist whose stories have appeared in 50 publications worldwide, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and the book Home & Away: Award-Winning Travel Stories by New Zealand Writers. He has received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University and a master’s in creative writing from the University of Auckland. He is at work on a new novel, a contemporary story set in New York City and the remote landscapes of New Zealand.
