Saturday Market in Gondar - by Ali Benge

From the collecton Short Stories

Alie Benge has lived in Tauranga, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Australia. She now lives in a tiny house in the backwoods of Upper Hutt. Her essays have been published in Takahē, Geometry, Mimicry, and Headland.

In 2017 Alie was joint winner of the Landfall Essay Competition.   She completed an MA in Creative Writing at the International Institute of Modern Letters, VUW, in 2018.

Saturday Market in Gondar is an excerpt from the memoir about a childhood in Ethiopia. This excerpt comes near the end of the book, and covers the writer's visit to Ethiopia with her father and sister. While she is working on her major collection of essays the manuscript of her childhood memoir rests quietly in a drawer.

Saturday Market in Gondar is part of Page Numbers 2019 - a showcase of new work from emerging writers.
