Louis Spohr reported that, "In loud passages the poor deaf man pounded on the keys 'til the strings jangled and in quiet ones he played so softly that whole groups of notes were omitted so that the music was unintelligible."

The Trio is one of 14 compositions Beethoven dedicated to Archduke Rudolf who was firstly his pupil and later his friend and patron.

Introduced by Peter Watts.
