Rebels leave bombarded district

Syrian rebels have pulled out of the besieged Baba Amr district of Homs after more than three weeks of bombardment by government forces.

A statement posted online says that they are making a tactical withdrawal for the sake of civilians still in the area.

Government forces have been bombarding the area since 4 February.

Homs is a symbol of the revolt against President Bashar al-Assad, which began 11 months ago.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council has unanimously demanded immediate humanitarian access to Syria.

The statement was backed by China and Russia, who until now, have resisted any moves to condemn Syria or take action against it.
