Plot to kill Putin 'thwarted'

10:14 pm on 27 February 2012

Ukrainian security services have confirmed they have thwarted a plot to kill Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Two suspects were detained in the Ukrainian port of Odessa, Russia's state-owned Channel One TV reported.

The arrested men were both shown on television admitting their involvement in the plot, after an explosion at a flat in January in which one suspect died, the BBC reports.

The attack was to happen after the presidential vote on Sunday.

Mr Putin is expected to win the election and a third term as president.
