Homs under heavy bombardment

4:53 am on 18 February 2012

Syrian forces unleashed their heaviest pounding of Homs in two weeks, after the United Nations General Assembly called on President Bashar al-Assad to stand down.

The bombardment is the heaviest since attacks on anti-government strongholds began 13 days ago.

Rockets were reported to be crashing into the Khaldiyeh and Bayyada districts of Homs at the rate of four per minute on Friday.

The BBC reports Government forces on the outskirts of the city are yet to make a big push on the ground to wipe out all resistance.
