Construction company stops work

9:12 am on 10 February 2012

One of Australia's oldest construction companies stopped trading on Thursday.

Kell & Rigby has been operating in New South Wales since 1910 and was involved in many major projects in Sydney, including the recent refurbishment of Sydney Town Hall.

More than 500 jobs could be lost. CFMEU secretary Brian Parker says the company stopped trading on Thursday and is likely to go into voluntary receivership on Friday.

The ABC reports the company has 12 major projects but the halt means work is stopped at sites in Brisbane, Sydney, Newcastle and Canberra.

Director James Kell sais there will be no work on the sites while the financial position is being reviewed.
