Seven dead in Afghan car bomb attack

10:23 pm on 5 February 2012

At least five police officers and two civilians have died in a car bomb attack on police headquarters in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar.

At least 19 people were wounded in the blast in a car park outside the police building, the provincial government said.

One resident described hearing a "heavy explosion" that shook windows followed by several minutes of gunfire.

No-one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

The BBC reports Kandahar is considered to be the spiritual homeland of the Taliban and militants frequently launch attacks against government and military targets in the province.
