Jordan has described the first face-to-face talks between Israeli and Palestinian negotiators in more than a year as "positive".
Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judgeh, who is hosting the meeting, says the stalemate has been broken, although no one was under any illusion about the difficulties lying ahead.
"The important thing is the two sides have met face-to-face today,"
he said. "We agreed that the discussions will be continuous, that the meetings will continue and will take place here in Jordan."
Mr Judeh said that the Israelis had promised to study a Palestinian paper on borders and security.
However, the meeting ended with no breakthrough on any imminent resumption of peace talks between the two sides, the BBC says.
Negotiations stalled late in 2010 in a dispute over Jewish settlement building in the West Bank.
Israeli envoy Yitzhak Molcho and Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat are meeting in bilateral talks as well as with the Quartet of Middle East mediators - the US, the EU, Russia and the United Nations.
