Indonesian police have been shown firing at protesters demonstrating against a planned gold mine, in video footage that has emerged of the confrontation.
At least two people have been killed and 10 others injured during the demonstration on the island of Sumbawa on Saturday, police said.
The confrontation occurred when hundreds of villagers refused to end their blockade of a local port.
Police were ordered to fire directly into the crowd. Later they can be seen dragging and beating one of the injured protesters.
A police statement said women and children were among protesters who have barricaded roads and the town's port since Monday and a police station and a government office were burnt down.
The demonstrators have been trying to prevent the construction of a gold mine owned by Indonesia's PT Sumber Mineral Nusantara and Australian company Arc Exploration.
Arc Exploration said in its June quarterly report no exploration work was possible in the quarter because of protests.
