Third series of period drama commissioned

ITV has commissioned a third series of period drama Downton Abbey.

The new series will continue to chart the fortunes of the Crawley family and their servants.

It will have eight episodes and will be set in the early 1920s.

The current season is set around World War I. There will also be a Christmas episode.

The BBC reports the most recent episode shown in Britain drew an audience of almost 10 million viewers.

The first series won four Emmy awards in the United States.
